BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV enrages MAGA world by declaring that "universal health coverage" is a "moral imperative" for society — destroying Republican talking points in a single blow.
This is what real moral leadership sounds like...
“Universal health coverage is not merely a technical goal to be achieved; it is primarily a moral imperative for societies that wish to call themselves just,” said Leo.
The leader of the Catholic Church — a staunch opponent of the casual cruelty and apathy towards suffering that defines modern conservative movements — was speaking at at conference about healthcare inequality organized by the European bishops' council, Italian bishops' conference, and the World Health Organization.
“Health cannot be a luxury for the few,” he said, because it “an essential condition for social peace.”
“Healthcare must be accessible to the most vulnerable, not only because their dignity requires it but also to prevent injustice from becoming a cause of conflict,” the pope added.
The speech was a potent counter-argument to the austerity measures favored in the United States, where countless Americans regularly go bankrupt due to medical debt. Democrats have long pushed for expanding healthcare, while Republicans oppose it on "fiscal responsibility" grounds when in reality they just want to funnel more money to the rich through plutocratic tax cuts and costly foreign wars.
Pope Leo said that eliminating healthcare inequalities will be especially helpful to younger generations battling mental health "because invisible psychological wounds are no less severe than those that are visible."
He warned that"distance, distraction and desensitization to the sight of violence and the suffering of others lead us toward indifference."
"Yet all men and women, especially Christians, are called to fix their gaze on those who suffer: on the pain of the lonely, on those who for various reasons are marginalized and considered 'outcasts,' " he added. "For without them, we cannot build just societies founded on the human person."
Predictably, right-wingers on social media are condemning Leo as a "communist" for daring to suggest that wealthy, modern, civilized nations should take care of their sick. What do you think?
